six senses has the ambitious goal to make the resort Plastic-Free by 2022 and Laamu Atoll Plastic-Free as well. in partnership with the Laamu Atoll Council, the resort donated USD18,805 to Laamu Atoll Council’s ‘Zero Plastic Waste Initiative at Schools’ (ZEPWIS). the funds helped provide 25 Kent brand water filters to all 21 schools and preschools across 11 islands in Laamu Atoll.

this donation will ensure clean, reliable, plastic-free drinking water is freely available to Laamu’s 3,724 students and will contribute to the Farukoe initiative to make every school in the Maldives plastic-free.

the machines work by reserve osmosis filtration and can produce between 8-20L/hour of mineral water. this will stop students from bringing 750,000 single-use plastic water bottles to school every year! the Laamu Atoll Council hosted the handover ceremony of the ZEPWIS project, during which a representative from each school accepted the donation in the form of a sign board to be displayed next to the filter, reading “every drop counts”.

General Manager, Marteyne van Well, stated, “It is our hope that this will create momentum for each island to work towards eliminating plastic bottles from households as well, and move on to removing plastic bags from shops, and eventually achieve our goal of making Laamu Atoll free of single-use plasticfree.” The resort also donated 30 household water filters this year to L. Maamendhoo Council’s ‘Maamendhoo Clean and Safe Water for Resilience Project’.
